L’innovazione tecnologica ed il progresso scientifico hanno moltiplicato il numero di prodotti disponibili sul mercato, creandone di nuovi e modificando quelli esistenti.
I materiali innovativi avanzati si distinguono da quelli tradizionali non tanto perché sono stati realizzati più di recente, ma perché sono altamente funzionali, cioè possono essere progettati, alterando la loro struttura fisica e chimica per modificare le informazioni che contengono e migliorarne le prestazioni.
Il progetto architettonico assume nuove potenzialità ed i nuovi materiali possono essere progettati ad hoc in risposta a esigenze sempre più complesse ed eterogenee; gli architetti possono alterare le prestazioni dei prodotti, non solo cambiando la loro configurazione macroscopica ma alterando la loro struttura atomica.
La crescente diffusione delle tecnologie dell’informazione sta contribuendo alla progressiva smaterializzazione dell’oggetto tecnologico, svincolandosi dalla materia e portando ad una nuova concezione del rapporto dell’uomo con la realtà che lo circonda.
Le frontiere tra naturale e artificiale, tra reale e virtuale, tendono a scomparire e la materia morbida sta diventando simbolo di questa indeterminatezza.
